Are You A Right Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?
Even though there are a lot of people considering in getting laser eye surgery, it is important to know if the procedure is applicable to you. Usually, the reason why people choose to get this extreme surgical procedure done to them is so they can have normal vision without having to depend on contact lenses or eyeglasses. But since the process is not applicable to just anybody, there are some factors that need to be considered.
A refractive eye surgery is not for you if:
- You’re not a risk talker- this is because there are some complications that might occur in patients. It is unavoidable since it will really happen to some unlucky patients.
- Cost is a concern- A refractive eye surgery can be very expensive. And even if you have medical insurance, there are a lot of them which will not pay for the procedure. Even though the cost for the surgery is going down, it still plays a significant part.
- Your career will be put at risk- There are some jobs which prohibit their employees to do certain eye refractive surgical procedures. Before considering the procedure, you should check with your employer to make sure that you can be an eligible candidate.
- You were needed to change your glasses or contact lens prescription in the previous year- This is referred to as refractive instability. It is commonly affective patients who are in their early 20s or even younger, fluctuating hormones as a result of disease like diabetes, pregnant or breastfeeding, or for those who are taking medications which may cause fluctuated vision.
- You participate actively in contact sports
- You have a disease which can affect wound healing
- You are not yet an adult
Currently, laser eye surgery is not applicable for people who are below 18 years old. On the other hand, if the above factors do not apply to you, you can start seeing your optometrist about getting the surgery.
