LASIK surgery: Initial patient education

Initial patient education happens on the first visit of the patient to the clinic or medical facility. The visit usually means having to attend a very thorough seminar, to let you in on the process. The seminar will also enable you to meet the staff who will be working with you if ever you get approved for a LASIK Surgery. Also during your initial visit, you will be evaluated to determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for LASIK surgery or if there’s another type of Laser Eye Surgery that’s better for you. You don’t have to worry too much about this because the medical staff and the Refractive Surgery Coordinator will help you determine what your goals and needs are for undergoing LASIK Surgery.
The coordinator is someone who spends a lot of time working closely with the surgeon, so you can be sure that are also highly trained. The coordinator and the staff will also help you decide by subjecting you to a free screening and evaluation. You should feel comfortable enough about the screening and tests because they will help you get a preview about the surgeon’s style and personality. The coordinator should be able to answer all your questions to make sure that you’ll be comfortable with the surgeon who will handle your case.
Before your evaluation and consultation
After a series of examinations and consultations, you will be given the final recommendations of the options you have. This is very important in the process, because the treatment will specifically meet your personal needs and goals. The Refractive Surgery Coordinator will ask a lot of questions because a lot of data are needed to make the necessary preparations.
As for your part, you should follow strictly what the coordinator will tell you. There will be precautions like how long you should avoid wearing your contacts before your next consultation, how long your next consultation would be, what steps and tests you are going to go through in you next consultation, and what drops you should put in your eyes. Usually these consultations take a long time, about two hours, in order to make the preparations carefully and precisely. You should be patient with these long consultations because the aim is to give you the best results possible.
